Summary:In the world of public accounting, marriage by merger is becoming more prevalent than it has been. Some firms elect to find a mate by turning to a matchmaker (facilitators), while others take matters into their own hands. Finding the right merger mate -- no matter which path you choose -- first requires knowing who you are, what you are looking for, and why you are looking for a match. Practitioners who expect to completely retire after a merger match should start their search for an acquirer at least three years beforehand. Some practitioners see merger or acquisition as an important part of their growth formula. Finding an optimal practice to supplement one's growth requires serious evaluation of upside and downside potential.
