His father, Frank, suffered from a pronounced stutter; Frank's children had vocal quirks of their own - talking in an odd dialect within the family, dubbed "Hawkingese" by friends. 2007 He experienced weightlessness for the first time on a specially modified zero-gravity plane, remarking at the time, "My next goal is to go into space; maybe Richard Branson will help me." He holds a reservation for a ride on Branson's commercial space venture, Virgin Galactic. 2011 Placed fifth on a list of Britain's greatest "national treasures", above Bobby Charlton but below Stephen Fry and Sean Connery.
