Washington and Lee University springs from humble beginnings

Seeking a leader to get the school back on its feet, school officials asked General Robert E. Lee to become president. Because his own home in Arlington had been confiscated by the North during the war and turned into a cemetery, the Lees had no place to live and the offer was accepted.
