Summary: | THIS month SlutWalk comes to South Africa. The event, which started in Toronto, Canada, has been staged successfully around the world. Itwas born of a Toronto policeman's assertion that women who dressed "like sluts" could expect to be sexually assaulted and raped. Still, I was surprised by some of the comments I read on SlutWalk Cape Town's Facebook group wall. One woman complained about the event's name, saying it was not "family friendly". Well, quite - rape and sexual violence are hardly "family friendly" topics, but surely responsible parents are talking to their sons and daughters about these tough, unpalatable issues? There is no point renaming this event. We can't call it the "Women Power Walk" or "Taking back our streets", or something equally generic - this is about a man in power, representing so many men in authority, who states without fear of a backlash that women must not dress "like sluts" if they want to avoid being raped. |
