Summary:[Michael Beer] admitted his selection came as a surprise, saying: 'I don't think it really sank in until I rang my parents and actually blurted it out myself and thought "Hang on, what's going on here?" 'Twelve months ago I probably wasn't a professional cricketer, that's in all facets.' Beer claimed five expensive wickets during the tourists' victory over Western Australia last month, when it is understood he repeatedly sledged Kevin Pietersen before trapping him leg-before on the reverse-sweep. Andrew Strauss's men may decide Beer's first-class bowling average of almost 40 is worthy of rather more comment. 'It probably takes me back to when Greg Chappell was last a selector in the 1980s and they picked a guy called Peter Taylor and the headlines greeted that with: "Peter who?"' Beer played for [Shane Warne]'s club St Kilda when he was based in Melbourne, but his failure to break into Victoria's first team persuaded him to join Western Australia instead earlier this year.
