Summary: | An indie label was the next logical step. Under the name Okayplayer records, the label's first release, True Notes Vol. 1, is due out May 18. This compilation features handpicked artists who The Roots say "will be a part of the next movement in hip hop." Some of these names will be familiar, others less so. Two of the record's top prospects - Jean Grae and Skillz - are part of the continent-wide tour that hits Toronto tonight. Grae is widely hailed as a powerful and poetic female MC. Skillz controlled the crowd at the half time of The Roots' last performance in Toronto (a significant feat). Also, the prodigous musical talent of Martin Luther will get a test on the Kool Haus stage. Always changing, yet never satisfied, Black Thought describes a Roots show best "You see the masterpiece / but to me it ain't perfected."Who The Roots with guests Grae, Skillz & Martin Luther |
