Summary:He and his wife, Valerie Kuinka, were in Sydney because [Richard Margison] was performing the role of Manrico in Verdi's opera, Il Trovatore, for Opera Australia. Kuinka had told Margison they would catch a taxi to the home of one of the opera company's directors and then go to a restaurant. Instead, when they walked in the door there was a house full of people, including Australia's most famous opera singer, Joan Sutherland, and her husband, Richard Bonynge, the director of this production of Il Trovatore. Described as the "spinto" that fans of Puccini and Verdi have been waiting for (meaning a tenor capable of reaching the high C's), Margison has set off foot stamping and ecstatic roars inside the Sydney Opera House, particularly whenever he's sung the famous aria, Di quella pira. Reviewer Deborah Jones described Margison's voice as "a big, bold, free voice equal to anything required of Verdi's Manrico (including the clarion top notes), and is lusciously beautiful in addition."
