Summary: | Hannah Arendt / Martin Heidegger, a new book to be published by Yale University Press in September, is the story of the most astounding love affair of this century. Both were prominent philosophers, but she was a Jew and he was very involved with the Nazi party for 12 years. Elzbieta Ettinger, the author of Hannah Arendt / Martin Heidegger, was working on a biography of Hannah Arendt when she obtained access to Heidegger's previously sealed archives. ``I myself was so impressed and intrigued by their love affair that I wrote this short book,'' says Ettinger, a professor of humanities at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Arendt and Heidegger didn't see each other until 1950 when she was in Freiburg, Germany, and wrote him a note that she was staying at a nearby hotel. ``She renewed their friendship. It was at her initiative,'' says Ettinger. ``The physical affair didn't continue, but for Hannah Arendt it was a life affair. She never got rid of this man.'' |
