Summary: | The women on the midweek bus from Montreal to the Laurentians have jockeyed for position near the driver. There are young au pairs, chatting their way back to their work families; in the back seat tipsy young people returning to resort jobs sing and make animal noises. When he sets his backpack down in the empty front seat beside one of the young women, her eyes brighten with alarm. Why must he put himself next to her, why; will the bus driver be able to protect her? Without looking at her, or at anything, the man lowers himself straight-backed into the seat, placing his scuffed black canvas pack under it. His eyes are pale, liquid blue, with a sharp scythe of nose and cheekbone, gingery trimmed beard and moustache. |
