Summary:[Paul Volpe] had already been warned he was not immune to the bitter struggle over Atlantic City turf. A stranger appeared at the Woodbridge door of a Volpe associate during the summer of 1980. The man was away with Volpe on a trip to New Jersey, so the stranger spoke to his wife. He said he was from the Philadelphia Church and looking for donations. "When you come to visit the church, you're expected to make donations," he told her, before she panicked and slammed the door. The stranger climbed into a black car, where three other strangers sat, then drove off. As the threats mounted, Volpe may have been distracted by his grand schemes. On Saturday, Nov. 12, 1983, a Volpe associate asked him for $2.5 million for a planned gambling casino in Antigua. Volpe men had already met with the island's prime minister and deputy prime minister about it.
