Summary: | [Andre Boisclair] told an afternoon news conference he is satisfied with the explanation offered by Robin Philpot, PQ candidate in Montreal's St. Henri-Ste. Anne riding, that he did not deny the 1994 mass slaughter of nearly a million members of the Tutsi tribe in the African nation by militias from the country's Hutu majority - even though Philpot is on record as saying genocide is an inappropriate term for what took place. Nor did Boisclair reproach Philpot for an apparently chummy relationship with Jean-Paul Akayesu, who was convicted of crimes against humanity by the international criminal tribunal for his part in the Rwandan slaughter. Philpot's brother acted as Akayesu's lawyer, and there is a picture in Philpot's book of him shaking hands with Akayesu. "I think Mr. Boisclair should act promptly and if Mr. Philpot is continuing to pretend that this genocide is something else than a genocide then he should not be a candidate for the Parti Quebecois. ... With the information I have now, I think there is no other choice than to ask Mr. Philpot to step down." |
