Summary:What the news editor at La Presse rightly detected was a portentous departure, both for Arcand and the direction of Quebec culture. Here, after all, was the darling of Quebec's cultural aspirations, swanning off in opposition to several prevailing ideological mantras. These are not normal times and coercive pressures on Quebec artists to toe ideological lines are significant. Nineteen ninety-one saw an obsessive effort by Quebec's government to corral its artistic community into a consensus around the concept "distinctive." There was pressure for unanimity, whatever the cost. There is, however, a deeper reason. Quebec's producers, judging by their response, are fed up to their canines with the direction of Quebec's "distinctive" cultural policies.
