Summary: | For his wife's 35th birthday in June, Mr. [TIMOTHY P. SOULAS] surprised her with a barbecue for 100 people in their backyard in Basking Ridge, N.J. To get her out of the house, he gave her a day at Elizabeth Arden. To ''get back at him'' on his 35th birthday in August, Mrs. Soulas surprised him with a chocolate Labrador puppy. She brought it to a football game and asked someone else to hold the leash. Mr. Soulas looked longingly at the dog. ''Isn't it beautiful?'' he asked. One Sunday every month Mrs. [KIRSTEN R. SANTIAGO], 26, who worked for Insurance Overload Systems in the World Trade Center, drove Sailor from their home in the Bronx to the Hudsonview Nursing Home in North Bergen, N.J., to play with patients and try to help them recover. Sailor had been certified by Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs Inc., as sufficiently well trained and friendly to play safely with people suffering from Alzheimer's and other illnesses, said June Golden, founder and president of the company. Mrs. Santiago was one of the most reliable volunteers, Ms. Golden said. Several of the therapy dogs attended a memorial service for Mrs. Santiago on Saturday, Ms. Golden said. [Scott Nilsen] is autistic, ''but he loved him no matter what, unconditionally,'' said Jennifer Nilsen, Mr. Nilsen's widow. And because of Scott's autism, Mr. Nilsen, 33, lavished more attention on him than on [Ryan]. He put Scott to bed every night, read him books, taught him the alphabet, taught him to swim and even went down slides with him. |
