Summary:Mount Royal riding - where 34,900 or 38 per cent of the 92,595 residents are Jewish - now reflects some of the Jewish community's declining tendency to vote Liberal almost en bloc. (Mount Royal takes in Hampstead, Cote St. Luc, Town of Mount Royal, Snowdon and part of Cote des Neiges. The riding with the next largest proportion of Jewish residents is Toronto Willowdale which is 20.4-per-cent Jewish.) This time around the Liberals and Conservatives are again represented by Jewish candidates in [Sheila Finestone] and [Robert Presser] while the New Democratic Party standard-bearer, Tariq Alvi, is of Pakistani origin. The NDP ran a Jewish candidate in the riding in the 1984 election. "This time around, Jewish community leaders say, there are no overriding Jewish issues as such. So Jewish voters, along with the rest of the electorate, are left to wrestle with - or yawn over - the issues of free trade, the Meech Lake accord, abortion, national leadership and local candidates.
