Summary: | Regrettably, the pattern is not a new one. My own nomination as President Ronald Reagan's choice to be the associate attorney general failed because my commitment to a colorblind society did not embrace "affirmative action." Robert Bork, Clarence Thomas, Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood have also all felt the unfairness of the process. Gale Norton, the president-elect's choice for interior secretary, should be called upon to explain her views on land use, but not vilified in advance because of her prior associations with James Watt, the famously conservative interior secretary under Reagan. Nor should she be ruled out because she has dared to acknowledge that during the Civil War, states' rights was an issue. |
