Summary:Founded in August 1984, MIPS is a privately held company based in Sunnyvale, Calif., which supplies minicomputer and work station manufacturers with chip sets - computer system building blocks - employing reduced instruction set computing. RISC is a computer architecture which makes very high speeds possible by relegating most operating instructions to software, leaving the computer's hardware free to handle computational tasks ''I believe RISC technology will have the same impact on information processing of the 1990's as the microprocessor had in the 1980's,'' Mr. [Robert C. Miller] said. He said he viewed MIPS as a leader in this new technology, with ''the potential to become a major force in the industry.'' (MIPS is an acronym for millions instructions per second.)
