Summary: | This brings us to the events of Sept. 11. Who among us would not want to erase the horrible events of that day? But what if we could? Let's say that the hijacking plot was uncovered without any loss of life or destruction, but Osama bin Laden was still implicated. Without the trauma and loss of that single day, would the will and resolve that surfaced around the world, and especially among Americans, be as strong? Could the president have acted as he did without the mandate to avenge this terrible wrong? Would a foiled terrorist attack rather than an actual one have engendered the same reaction? Would NATO or the countries neighboring Afghanistan have supported us? Our response would probably have been muted--maybe only isolated air strikes. Maybe the Taliban would still be in power today. Maybe the terrorists would still be free to develop their weapons of mass destruction. Maybe additional thousands, or even millions, would die as a result of their still being in control. |
