Summary:The poverty-causes-war theory is equally untrue in Africa. Take, for instance, Mozambique and Angola. Both are former Portuguese colonies that had long civil wars and UN peacekeeping operations designed to help end them. In Angola, a country rich in oil and diamonds, the UN failed miserably and the war continues. In Mozambique, where the main resources are only shrimp and cashews, the UN succeeded. In Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of the Congo there is an abundance of diamonds--and an abundance of people willing to fight over them.
