Summary:When state Democratic Party Chairman Gary LaPaille endorsed gubernatorial candidate John Schmidt on Friday, it reflected the political moves of a man who had few options. LaPaille, who is stepping down as state chairman in April, has had his share of feuds with other party leaders. In endorsing Schmidt rather than one of the three other major contenders, he added fuel to those flames while still trying to ingratiate himself with Mayor Richard Daley. "When you take a look at it, to go against George Ryan, (Schmidt) is the candidate," LaPaille said of his preferred Democratic matchup against the presumptive Republican nominee. Still, LaPaille said, he still feels that "the other three candidates are my friends."
