Summary: | After the story broke in The Atlanta Constitution, the American Jewish Committee received many phone calls from YMCA supporters upset about the report. One of the most gratifying calls was from Fred Bradley, president and CEO of Metro Atlanta YMCA. He reassured the Atlanta Jewish Committee, separating the good and important work of the YMCA from this offensive, inaccurate report. Regarding the New Attitudes column on Bible reading: I agree that many children and teens suffer from a lack of moral and spiritual guidance. To equate that void, however, with the absence of Bible- reading is to discount that the majority of people on Earth are not Christian and therefore do not look to the Bible for religious, spiritual or moral guidance. Leonard Peltier is a Native American human rights activist convicted of killing FBI Agents Ron Williams and Jack Koler, who were searching for robbery suspects on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota in June 1975. Peltier was convicted and sentenced in 1977. I and many of Peltier's supporters believe that the evidence against him was falsified. We also believe that Leonard Peltier is a scapegoat, used to cover up crimes committed against Indian people on a coal and uranium rich reservation in the 1970s. |
