Butch Vig, Shirley Manson and crew sound more comfortable with their talent than they did on their self-titled 1995 debut, while retaining that first set's knack for catchy tunes and galvanizing riffs. Using every last ounce of technology available, the band is a textbook example of the marriage of '90s studio savvy and timeless pop smarts. Manson's lyrics are more in-your-face, and Vig, acclaimed for his production work on Nirvana's "Nevermind," undoubtedly deserves the credit for the sonic power.
