Summary: | ROCK "Version 2.0" Garbage. Almo Sounds. 12 tracks. Grade: A-. Garbage has faced down the specter of the sophomore slump and sent it packing. This is an assured, confident set of songs that announces its intention of sucking you in from the first note of "Temptation." Butch Vig, Shirley Manson and crew sound more comfortable with their talent than they did on their self-titled 1995 debut, while retaining that first set's knack for catchy tunes and galvanizing riffs. Using every last ounce of technology available, the band is a textbook example of the marriage of '90s studio savvy and timeless pop smarts. Manson's lyrics are more in-your-face, and Vig, acclaimed for his production work on Nirvana's "Nevermind," undoubtedly deserves the credit for the sonic power. |
