Summary:Regarding an article on New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter's new contract ("Jackpot! Derek Jeter gets $189 million," Sports, Feb. 10), why is it necessary for taxpayers to build stadiums and other facilities to provide preferential treatment for any business that can afford a 10-year contract paying $18.9 million a year to just one of the many player employees on the baseball team? Baseball, for the owners, is for profit and competes for the consumers' entertainment dollar. The taxpayers get shafted. Second, I have questions about a recent article about Bill Campbell ("Judge: Campbell blocked court to obtain demand," Metro, Feb. 10). The article describes Mayor Bill Campbell's tactics to privatize traffic fine collections. The corruption in the mayor's office is well known, and the mayor and his friends have repeatedly misused government to funnel tax funds irresponsibly to privatized firms. As concerned students of the Stone Mountain Charter School, we think the decision not to renew the school's charter if test scores do not improve is extremely unfair ("Low scores threaten to close DeKalb charter school," Metro, Feb. 12).
