Summary:Dan Rather can't help sounding like Dan Rather. Ask him a simple question, you get a Rather answer: a homily-encrusted trip to you-never-know-where. Ask if he's happy with "48 Hours," the CBS newsmagazine he has hosted since 1986, moving to Tuesdays at 10 p.m. from Thursdays opposite NBC's top-rated "ER," and Rather answers, "(Thursday night) has been described to me as `Death Valley,' and we have walked through that valley. And though we walked through that valley of death and survived, now we walk through another valley (opposite ABC's "NYPD Blue" and NBC's "Dateline"). But I'm of good spirit about it." Well. Rather is in good spirits all around. He recently spurned an offer by CNN and re-signed with CBS. His nightly newscast has of late slipped out of last place, topping ABC's news with Peter Jennings and closing in on NBC's news with Tom Brokaw, seeming to validate the hard-news approach he has tried to maintain.
