Summary:The Editors: It is interesting that Martha Ezzard wants to help inform the Republicans about the danger of getting too close to the Christian Coalition, which seems to be taking credit for the Republicans' power in the U.S. Senate and House ("Christian coalition; wooing a not-so-silent minority," Sept. 15). The Christian Coalition is more of a threatening mother hen than a viable rooster. There is no place at the table for bratty children such as founder Pat Robertson. With his backroom deals and shady past, he has no room for gloating over his moral superiority. There's more to being a Republican than religious convictions; we are a party that celebrates individual freedom and seeks less government intrusion into the private lives of citizens. The Republican message is clear: Work together to get rid of Democrats or we will harm each other with our personal agendas. The Editors: The writer of the letter "Back off buckling" (Wednesday) said the safety belt law is a government intrusion and that citizens have enough sense and responsibility to decide whether to buckle up. The problem with this thinking is that the person making the decision affects more than himself or herself. Loved ones will suffer when that person receives serious injuries or dies needlessly. Medical costs will be higher, and those expenses ultimately find their way to everyone's (read: my) insurance premiums. There's even a chance that some accidents could be avoided altogether if a driver is secure behind the wheel.
