Summary:[Stuart O. Simms] entered the race for attorney general relatively late and has raised far less money than his primary opponents, Montgomery County State's Attorney Douglas F. Gansler and Montgomery County Council member Tom Perez. Campaign finance reports filed last week showed that Gansler had raised nearly $1.7 million, with $1.4 million still in his war chest. Perez had brought in more than $500,000 and had roughly $330,000 on hand. Simms had raised more than $218,000 and had $65,800 left to spend. Other Southern Maryland officials supporting Simms include Dels. John L. Bohanan Jr. (D-St. Mary's), Sue Kullen (D-St. Mary's), Murray D. Levy (D-Charles), James E. Proctor Jr. (D-Prince George's) and Joseph F. Vallario Jr. (D-Prince George's), Charles County Commissioners President Wayne Cooper (D-At Large), Charles County Commissioner Edith J. Patterson (D-Pomfret) and Calvert County Commissioner Wilson H. Parran (D-At Large). Gansler campaigned in St. Mary's County on Tuesday, visiting a retirement home in Leonardtown, headlining a luncheon fundraiser in Compton and canvassing door-to-door in Leonardtown. He and Perez have picked up their share of endorsements: Gansler from most of the other prosecutors across the state and from some Prince George's County leaders, including Rep. Albert R. Wynn and County Executive Jack Johnson; Perez from several major labor unions, including those representing Montgomery police and sheriff's deputies.
