(Published 1/22/ 04) Holding a historic first meeting at the Vatican with Pope John Paul II, Israel's chief rabbis asked the Roman Catholic pontiff Friday to join in the fight against a rising tide of terrorism and anti-Semitism. Amar, chief rabbi of Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern European origin, and Yona Metzger, chief rabbi of Sephardic Jews of Iberian origin, came to Rome at the invitation of the Vatican to attend a Concert of Reconciliation along with the pope, Vatican officials and other Jewish and Muslim representatives.
