Summary: | In recent years, Virginia could boast one of the strongest economies and lowest unemployment rates in the nation, and young workers such as [Twanna Ware] were snapped up quickly by eager employers. But unemployment in the state began to rise even before the attacks of Sept. 11, climbing from about 2.2 percent in August 2000 to 2.9 percent in August 2001, the most recent period tracked, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Unemployment has risen in Loudoun and Fauquier counties, where joblessness has traditionally trailed the rest of the state. In Loudoun, unemployment in August was 2.8 percent, compared with 1.0 percent in August 2000; in Fauquier, unemployment in August was 1.4 percent, and last year's unemployment for August was 0.9 percent. The biggest increases were recorded in Alexandria, where claims rose from 8,000 for all of 2000 to 11,000 so far this year, and Fairfax, where 7,000 claims were filed in 2000 and 12,000 have been submitted through the end of September. Both jurisdictions have been hit hard by the closing of Reagan National Airport for more than three weeks and the collapse of the local tourism industry. |
