Summary:Washington area residents have deep concerns about the region's ability to respond to another terrorist attack and about the government's handling of the anthrax crisis, with 32 percent saying they fear that anthrax will affect them personally, a new poll for a business and civic leadership group has found. The special regional gathering, which was opened yesterday by Mayor Anthony A. Williams (D) and included representatives of Maryland Gov. Parris N. Glendening (D) and Virginia Gov. James S. Gilmore III (R), focused on the private sector's ability to deliver critical services such as health care, food distribution and telecommunications in an emergency. Overall, the poll found that the area is enjoying a "rally" effect, with people identifying strongly with their neighbors, communities and greater Washington as a whole. The survey, conducted by Bethesda polling firm Potomac Inc., contacted 800 adults areawide between Nov. 16 and 26. It is accurate to within 3.5 percentage points of the views of the area's 5.4 million residents.
