Summary:WorldCom's board and its influential creditors' committee consider Capellas the top choice. So does WorldCom CEO John Sidgmore, who is helping search for his successor. A new CEO could be in place by January. WorldCom, which hopes to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection by mid-2003, declined comment. At WorldCom, Capellas, 48, would have to overcome his lack of telecom experience and a huge slowdown in demand for phone and Internet services. He'd also have to clean up a company tarnished by more than $9 billion in improper accounting and rescue it from the biggest bankruptcy case in history. Some tech analysts don't rule out Capellas sprucing up WorldCom, then selling it, as he largely did with Compaq.
