Summary:Courier played four-plus fierce sets against sixth-ranked Kafelnikov, then fell apart in the final game of the fifth set as the Russians claimed the first point of this tie with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-7 (7-2), 6-4, 6-4 triumph. Andre Agassi, the top U.S. singles player here this weekend, evened the score with an easy 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory over 170th-ranked Marat Safin in the second singles match. The victory, Agassi's 16th straight in Davis Cup competition, tied him with Bill Tilden for most consecutive Davis Cup victories in U.S. history. A day behind schedule thanks to the Friday thunderstorms, the tie continues Sunday morning when Kafelnikov and teammate Andrei Olhovskiy are expected to face Americans Todd Martin and Richey Reneberg in doubles. That is, if Kafelnikov agrees. After beating Courier today, Kafelnikov insisted that he would not play doubles, and would instead rest himself for his upcoming singles match against Agassi. Courier -- among others -- scoffed at Kafelnikov's remarks.
