Summary:Though several trustees yesterday said they were upset with the governor over his targeting of [William M. Bulger], both [Mitt Romney] and [Grace K. Fey] downplayed the likelihood of conflict. "I'm hoping for a good relationship with the governor. I think we've been through a really tough patch here - things deteriorated in ways that I would never have imagined," said Fey. "Yet Mitt Romney is the governor of the state, and we're a public institution, we have to work with the governor's office as well as the [House] speaker and the Senate president." For the interim presidency, Fey said yesterday that all five UMass campus chancellors would be considered, as well as UMass insiders and prominent outsiders. "It's fair to say that all the chancellors would be considered, but then again they all have full plates and have their hands full with their own campuses," she said. "But I don't want to rule anyone out." Attracting considerable buzz among UMass insiders as interim candidates are UMass Medical School head Aaron Lazare and Jack M. Wilson, CEO of UMassOnline and also the new vice president for academic affairs. Wilson said he has not been contacted and Lazare could not be reached yesterday. UMass-Amherst Chancellor John V. Lombardi declined an interview request and issued a short statement saying, "the focus needs to be on what the trustees want to do."
