Summary: | The Massachusetts Medical Society is a very lucky owner of The New England Journal of Medicine, a venerable journal that has been published under different names and owners since 1812. In 1922, the MMS bought the journal for one dollar, surely the best investment any state medical society has ever made. But now they tell us that the journal is not enough, that the public needs their special leadership and insight to convey more medical information to the public. In the Aug. 1 Globe, current MMS president Dr. Jack T. Evjy is quoted as saying, "We need to find new ways to move the truth. . . . The Massachusetts Medical Society can make sure the information we publish is the truth" ("Journal torn by dispute on new ventures," Metro, Aug. 1). |
