Summary:NEW FIRETRUCK TO BE DELIVERED Fire Chief Thomas J. Ronayne III expects that the arrival of a new pumper truck today will end the town's firetruck headache. It began a month ago, when the department's pumper truck broke down on its way to a motor vehicle fire on Route 128. The estimated cost of repairs was $40,000. After a review, the department decided it could decrease the total number of engines from five to four, and buy a new truck for $400,000 $75,000 less than had been expected. The new pumper will be housed at Station 2 near the Ponkapoag Golf Course. Ronayne said Westwood loaned Canton one of its firetrucks for at least a month, and without it Canton would have had inadequate coverage. Elaine Cushman Carroll PROGRAM ON KING PHILIP'S WAR The Dedham Historical Society will hold a lecture and slide presentation on King Philip's War at 7:30 tonight at the Dedham Historical Society Museum on High Street. Michael Tougias, the author of "Until I have No Country: A Novel of King Philip's War in New England" and coauthor of "King Philip's War: The History and Legacy of America's Forgotten Conflict," will give the presentation on the war between the colonists and Native Americans from 1675 to 1676. The lecture is free for members and $5 for nonmembers. The first part of the presentation will discuss the Indian way of life, Colonial settlements, and the events leading up to the war. The second part will cover the battles and strategy during the war. For more information, call Ron Frazier at 781-326- 1385. Peter Schworm THOMAS WON'T BE ON BALLOT Joseph Thomas, who lost a six-month seat on the Board of Selectmen to Steven Spataro in a special election last December, had planned to face off against Spataro again this spring when the full three-year term was on the ballot. Thomas turned his nomination papers in to the town clerk's office with the required 50 voter signatures plus three to spare, but his name will not be on the April 1 ballot. According to Town Clerk Eileen Gates, six of the signatures on Thomas's election papers could not be certified by her office. Gates said names can be excluded for a variety of reasons, such as if they are unreadable or an incorrect address is given. "The bottom line was he came up short," Gates said. Gates said that Thomas has already made some inquiries about launching a write-in campaign. Thomas could not be reached for comment.
