Summary: | The Exorcism of Emily Rose | B+ (PG-13; 1:54): Laura Linney and Tom Wilkinson turn in first-rate performances in this thriller from director Scott Derrickson. Part supernatural shocker, part courtroom drama, the film takes on an awfully big subject: the role, and limits, of faith in modern life. It's one of the most entertainingly provocative films of the year. (CW) Just Like Heaven | B (PG-13; 1:47): Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo are extremely likable in this amusing but uneven romantic comedy with a supernatural spin. Witherspoon is an accident victim stuck between here and the hereafter; Ruffalo is a lonely guy who moves into her apartment. Although director Mark Waters ("Mean Girls") doesn't seem fully engaged with the material, it's a solid date movie. (CW) War of the Worlds *** (PG-13: 1:56): In Whilethis remake, hammers us into submission like the mightiest of summertime spectacles, the pall of 9/11 hangs over the story of a longshoreman from New Jersey (Tom Cruise) has his custody weekend with his two children interrupted by an alien invasion. The escaping family's close-call heroics eventually become wearisome, but director Steven Spielberg's unmistakable zeal gives this bountiful pot of signifiers a strong aftertaste. (JW) |
