Summary:For years, Tina Sabatini wrote letters to the U.S. Postal Service, pleading for the creation of a stamp honoring coal miners. Like many area residents whose ancestors worked in local coal mines, Sabatini watched her father suffer from black lung and die at an early age. Sabatini was just 20 years old when her father died, but says she never forgot his sacrifice to the family. Sabatini's father, Charles Mazzarella, became disabled at age 39. He became incapacitated at age 45, and agonized through the next seven years of his life. During those seven years, Sabatini's mother, Antonietta, had to spend $7 a week on oxygen tanks for Mazzarella, feed him and bathe him, and carry him around the house on her back. After Mazzarella could no longer work, Antonietta had to look for a new source of income to support the couple's two children.
