Summary: | Just as the vehicle escorting [Derrick Sharpe] pulled in front of his Mulberry Street house around noon, Sharpe's girlfriend Amber Frey hopped in the pickup truck's bed and got down on her knee with an engagement ring in hand. "At least now he knows he's all I want. What better way to prove it?" said Frey, 20, a longtime best pal whose friendship grew to affection when she visited Sharpe in a military hospital in December. "I told Derrick, 'I would stick behind you even if you didn't have any arms or legs. I would carry you on my back if I had to.'" Becoming a Marine was a lifelong goal for Sharpe, whose bloodline includes a grandfather and great-grandfather who were Marines. His father enlisted, but was ruled medically ineligible. His brothers, 15 and 17, plan to join. Sharpe enlisted before he graduated from high school and did his senior graduation project on the Marines. He has a tattoo of the Marines emblem across his back and his unit's number on his right forearm. |
