Summary:Apple will also include rival software made by Netscape Communications Inc. while it ships the Microsoft browser. Still, the move is a victory for Microsoft. Its growing willingness to work with Apple comes after years of fierce competition which has been a major source of Apple's woes. Since his arrival at Apple last February, Mr. [Gilbert Amelio] has moved to smooth relations between the two companies. In his long-awaited address at the Macworld trade show here, Mr. Amelio promised that Apple's $400 million acquisition of Next Software Inc., headed by Apple cofounder Steve Jobs, will provide the technological base for a "breakthrough" new operating system. Apple still is on the road to recovery, he said, despite the announcement last week of an unexpected quarterly loss of more than $100 million. Mr. Jobs, in his own speech, said Apple would have to labor to catch up with Microsoft's Windows NT, Apple's main operating-system competition. "That won't be easy," Mr. Jobs said.
