Summary: | In the most potent marriage yet of Hollywood and high technology, Microsoft Corp. and DreamWorks SKG announced plans for a sweeping joint venture under which they will develop interactive and multimedia entertainment products. Officials at DreamWorks, the entertainment company formed by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, and Microsoft, led by computer-software visionary Bill Gates, predicted that revenue from the venture could reach "several hundred million dollars" in a three- to-five-year timeframe. The venture, DreamWorks Interactive, will focus initially on creating CD-ROM adventure-theme games, interactive stories and other forms of multimedia software for families. A number of the titles will be based on motion picture and television concepts produced under the DreamWorks SKG banner. The partners said they expect to produce as many as two dozen titles a year. |
