Summary:In the wake of the World Trade Center bomb explosion last Friday, small companies around the country are rushing to pitch products and services designed to help people avoid disaster or cope with it. At the site of the New York disaster, SmartSoft Systems Inc. was distributing pamphlets to passersby yesterday in front of the World Trade Center towers. Its flyer read: "Got a sick PC? Computer Doctors Are Ready To Help You." Says Yigal Melamud, president: "A lot of companies are moving around right now and need help with their computers, and we're in a position to lend a hand." But companies far removed from the blast also had ideas. Essex PB&R Corp., an Elkton, Md., provider of emergency life-support systems, says it probably will alter its promotion of a new portable safety hood coincidentally introduced last week. The hood protects users from smoke and toxic fumes, including poisonous carbon monoxide. The initial ad campaign targeted business travelers who could be trapped in burning jets or hotels. Now the firm says it probably will focus its ads on tenants in high-rise office buildings.
