Summary:Dear Editor: One of the worst cases of the smell test being violated occurred when Sens. Gary George, Robert Welch and others "quietly tucked (SB107) into the proposed state budget," as reported in state newspapers. SB107 effectively eliminates all child protective measures from state law in cases of divorce. It removes the provision "in the best interest of the child" from existing law and requires custody and placement of children to be split equally between both parents regardless of parental fitness or ability to care for the child. It is blatantly unfriendly to children. Yet, when divorce makes it necessary, child placement should be based solely on what is best for the children rather than attempting to appease the parents.
