Summary: | A fire broke out beneath the Harahan railroad bridge spanning the Mississippi River Thursday afternoon, but it was extinguished without any damage to the bridge. The fire started in the grassy area underneath the Arkansas side of the bridge about noon and was extinguished by about 4:30, West Memphis Fire Department captain Charles Stover said. Some railroad debris was also burned, but not the bridge itself. Stover said the railroad was shut down for a couple of hours. Memphis Fire Department officials lent a hand by pumping water from the Tennessee side of the bridge through a pipe running alongside it. |
