Summary:The North Carolina part of the interstate, a 15-mile stretch, won't be completed for several years. State officials and residents there don't want oversized and double-trailer trucks on their part of U.S. 23 in the meantime. North Carolina officials say people who live between Sam's Gap and Asheville along the highway are concerned about the traffic and the safety of their school buses and pedestrians. But with the opening of the 15-mile stretch of I-26 from Erwin to the North Carolina line, the volume of traffic, including trucks, is expected to jump. That traffic will go from a four-lane interstate to the two-lane U.S. 23 in North Carolina.
