Summary: | [LAURA BUSH], [COLIN L. POWELL] and other speakers praised Bush's record, saying he has raised achievement levels across social-economic levels and would do the same as president. Powell, 63, highlighted Bush's pledge to be an inclusive leader during a commanding 30 minutes on stage. Bush has brought minorities "inside the tent by responding to their deepest needs," he said. The party should do the same, he added, "and not just during an election year campaign." Bush's promise of "a different kind of convention" departed from tradition with the first night of the "rolling roll call" of the states from Alabama to Iowa, which all cast their votes for Bush, the only nominee. Cindy McCain, the Arizona delegation's chairwoman and wife of Bush's primary elections rival, John McCain, "enthusiastically and unanimously" bequeathed her state's 30 delegates to Bush. |
