Summary:War came on a quiet Sunday morning, June 25, 1950, as 60,000 Communist North Koreans and Russian-trained Chinese troops attacked along a 200-mile front at the 38th parallel separating South and North Korea. While [Douglas] MacArthur began planning his bold master stroke of the Inchon Landing, the "brass" and politicians in Washington were protesting. MacArthur's autobiography, "Reminiscences," says they chose to "dissuade rather than discuss" his plans. His strategy was to take Inchon, thereby twisting the key in the lock of the enemy's defenses by taking Kimpo Airfield; proposing that United Nations' troops could win back Seoul; relieve the battered and fatigued 8th U.S. Army, and win back the Pusan Perimeter. It was because MacArthur saw his plan through that the Communist tide was turned at a tremendous loss of lives on both sides.
