Summary: | [LEMMON] is slight and gray; [Walter Matthau] is big and dark. Lemmon is soft-spoken; you hear Matthau's voice resonating down the hall long before you reach hi hotel room. Lemmon is the consummate gentleman, polite to a fault; Matthau is the crusty bear who says what he wants when he wants to whom he wants and doesn't worry about the consequances. [Mark Steven Johnson] says he wrote the movie with Lemmon and Matthau in mind. Upon hearing that, Lemmon took it as a compliment. Matthau, true to form, reacted completely differently. Part of Matthau's reaction may stem from the fact that he toyed with the idea of trading roles. The actors are typecast: Matthau plays the blustery curmudgeon with the soft heart, while Lemmon is the excitable, befuddled Everyman. Similarities to Oscar and Felix from "The Odd Couple" are many. |
