Summary: | As a physician practicing anesthesia for more than 20 years, I felt the editorial was fairly balanced in its reporting. However, I fear that many people will emotionally respond to the analogy using poor people and luxury automobiles quoted from an American Society of Anesthesiologists newsletter. First, this newsletter is circulated to anesthesiologists only and provides a public forum for policy debate - it does not represent the policy of the ASA. Anesthesiologists have provided epidural analgesia to all mothers requesting such, without knowledge of their ability to pay, since well before I started to practice. |
