Summary:A recent Post-Gazette article, "Pass the Marinara Sauce: Tomatoes Help Lower Cancer Risk" (Feb. 17), further demonstrates the poor understanding of the scientific method among the public and the media. The meta-analysis mentioned "analyzed 72 past studies that had examined the link between various cancers and the consumption of tomatoes and tomato-based products." The conclusion that tomatoes reduce cancer risk is not, like so many observational dietary studies, proved by the data.
