Summary:With a tight city budget looming, the leaders of some community groups asked Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz Thursday night to spare their programs from the budget ax. In a change from previous years, many groups were thrilled with the chance to make their case to the mayor before he presents his budget to the City Council Oct. 7. In past years, groups lobbied city officials after the mayor's proposal. But from now on, Cieslewicz said he wants public input before drawing up the final numbers on his yearly budget. Many of those present applauded Cieslewicz for seeking public input before he submits his 2004 budget. A formal hearing on the budget by the City Council will be held Nov. 4.
