Summary:Impressed by that show of confidence, and the fact [Nick] Davis could back it up, [Barry] Alvarez made Davis his kick return specialist as a true freshman in 1998. The results were spectacular: Davis returned two punts for touchdowns and ranked third nationally in punt-return average last season. Not only did Davis have an 81-yard punt return nullified by a penalty, he dropped a perfectly placed long pass from quarterback Scott Kavanagh and fumbled a punt that provided the Bearcats with the final three points of their 17-12 stunner at Nippert Stadium. Bennett disputes penalty: Sophomore Michael Bennett swears he is honest, and the game tape will likely back him up. Bennett was called for a blocking-from-behind penalty in the second quarter that nullified Davis' 81-yard return for a touchdown. That would have been Davis' third return for a TD in three games.
